The German band Boney M released “Zion’s Daughter” as a Christmas single in 1982. It is the second single from their 1981 Christmas album.
It was a revised, uptempo rendition of Georg Friedrich Händel’s oratorio “Judas Maccabaeus” song “See, the victorious hero coming!” with English lyrics by Fred Jay.
The German advent carol’s song is well known in England as part of Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs, which is played each year during the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms program.
The record included a retouched 1978 portrait with new male vocalist Reggie Tsiboe replacing original member Bobby Farrell.
The single reached number 41 in Germany. “Feliz Navidad” was picked as the 1982 Christmas single in Scandinavia, whereas Ariola chose “Jingle Bells” in Spain.
