Cornwall gave birth to the first Noel. It was initially published in its present version in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), both edited by William Sandys and arranged, edited, and had supplementary lyrics written by Davies Gilbert for Hymns and Carols of God.

The English composer John Stainer, which was initially published in 1871 in his Carols, New and Old commonly played it in a four-part hymn arrangement. Victor Hely-Carol Hutchinson’s Symphony has variations on its subject.
